How to find a WordPress category ID

Many WordPress themes, especially those in magazine style, need to have some configurations in terms of category IDs in order to show things properly. They will often ask you for a Category ID in the theme option panel. And you might be wandering how on earth to find those IDs.

That is, in fact, a quite easy task – even though it might be a little tricky. This post is all about those IDs and how to find them in no time. Here we go:

  1. On your dashboard, under the Posts menu, click Categories;
  2. Keep the mouse over the category whose ID you need;
  3. Look at your browser’s status bar and you will see something like this in the shown URL: tag_ID=160all you need is the number.

So that you know, this is true for WordPress tags and other custom taxonomies you might be using in your site – the ID finding process is the same.

This is all for this time. I hope you enjoyed it. And good luck!

Web Design: Best of 2008

In the year that we left behind, web design trends and techniques where described in the opening paragraph of a post at WebDesignerWall by Nick La one of most prominent web designers of 2008. Here is what he puts forward:

This year, more designers are using the large background technique and utilizing Javascript frameworks (such as jQuery and MooTools) to enchance the user experience. I also came across a few designs that mixed Flash with CSS; perhaps a new trend we should look for in 2009?

He has been very descriptive in information and selective in words, letting us  have, in few words, a clear view of what 2008 contributed to the world wide web in terms of design and user experience.

I strongly suggest that you have a look at the article and enjoy the best of CSS web desing in 2008.

WPlancer is Releasing First Free WordPress Theme – Master

I am very happy to announce that I am releasing my first free WordPress theme ever. It is called “Master” and it’s a simple, yet powerful theme that can be used as a blog or magazine. It is a very light theme coded in a minimalistic fashion.  I know that it is not the best theme out there and it is not even the best of what I can accomplish with WordPress, but what makes is a special theme is the fact that it will have premium and very affordable, yet admirable, support and customization services around it.

Do I have to pay for the theme?

No, the theme will be available for free download and usage. The theme in fact is being released under the GPL license which is the same license that WordPress uses. The theme will also have free updates and upgrades forever. Also, I hope we guys build a great support forum for this theme and others to come which will also be free to access, ask and answer.

What do I have to pay for than?

You might never have to pay for anything. But, in case you need help to set up the theme, configure the plugins etc, you might want to buy one of the five (5) service packages that will come along with the theme. These packages vary from setup to theme enhancements and even PSD to the actual theme. More information about this topic will come along with the theme release.

How much do I have to wait for the theme?

Hopefully, not much. I have submitted the theme to WordPress theme directory and as soon as the guys of WordPress make the theme come live, I will make it available for my readers too. I fact I want the theme to be downloaded only from WordPress theme directory, that is why I am not releasing it right now, even thought the theme can be called finished. I think the guys at WordPress won’t need more than 2-3 days to approve it.

Where can I preview the theme?

Just below. I am attaching an image preview of the theme for the curious guys to have a look and hopefully make comments, suggestions and constructive criticism if there is needed any.

Master WordPress Theme

Also, I would love to hear your thoughts, so post a comment and you will be rewarded with a back-link from my site.

WPlancer has at last a new WordPress freelance portfolio

After months of designing and coding WordPress blogs and websites, after months of offering consulting and support to my clients, I managed at last to put together some of my favorite web projects which would be called  my portfolio. Struggling for time and rocking my mind about how my new portfolio page should look like, I decided at last that it should be a simple one and have the shape, look and feel that you can see now.

wplancer-portfolio

What you can see at my portfolio is about 1/4 of all sites I have been working on. The websites that I have featured are the ones I enjoyed the most developing and are almost 100% my own work. I have been working on other great sites, but for some reason I  chose not to present them at my portfolio. However, you can find more about my works just googling  the “by WPlancer” phrase.

I’m not going to talk any longer, I think I said enough. I would love to hear how you find my new portfolio and the works I have done. Also, if you are in need of a WordPress designer or a WordPress coder or you just need other WordPress related services, you have found the right person – just contact me and you will see we will have a wonderful experience together.
